Adding dns servers via netsh is pretty straight forward:

  • netsh int ip set dns “NameOfConnection” static 10.0.0.254  (Primary Server)
  • netsh int ip add dns “NameOfConnection” 10.0.0.253 index=2 (secondary server)

I got an error saying my secondary DNS server was unreachable or improperly configured when I ran the second commands; turned out the DNS server VM didn’t start the service properly.   I figured this out when testing the server with nslookup and it would not respond; so I restarted the DNS service and it worked.
